hip hop is bigger than the government

hip hop is bigger than the government

wearing graphic tees or sweatshirts can be annoying at times. i wear them because i like the design or its message, but i didn't ask for people to stare at my chest all day, trying to read what the words say or understand their meaning. i'm rolling my eyes in the last photo because people often think my wearing this particular sweatshirt is an open invite to have a political discussion with me. some guy even said it was some "illuminati shit". he was joking but i was still like 😒.

the phrase is actually a lyric of erykah badu's "the healer" from her 2008 new amerykah album. in the chorus, she also says hip hop is "bigger than religion" and "[her] n*gga". i don't think badu is saying hip hop has more global influence than politics or religion, but rather that it's a better form of escape. some people are more likely (if not definitely) to turn to music for solace rather than the government, religion, or even their friends and lovers. music is the healer.

aside from music, style/fashion is obviously my healer. i feel the most 💯 when i express myself through my LEWKS & it makes me utterly happy to see others do the same. how about you, what's your healer?!?
